Good Times Motorsports evidently overbought 2009 Aprilia's. Only one person mentioned my size (I weigh just under 1/6th of a ton - my goal is to get down to 1/7th of a ton, which is what Nero Wolfe weighed). The rider coaches at the school, and the sales people, kept telling me I needed something bigger. The only way to get there is on an interstate. I've recently un-retired for a part time job and school in Sacramento. I wanted to sit upright, and I didn't want to worry about clutches and foot pedals. I did my research, I knew I wanted a scooter, not a motorcycle.

Today, Saturday, we're going to buy a scooter.

Got my M1 license (or a piece of paper that says I have an M1 License) on Thursday. I didn't do extremely well (more about that later) but I passed. Most people looked at me, and said I'd need even more. Practically, everybody says I'd need at least 250 cc. Legally, I'd need at least 150 cc to be able to drive on the interstate. The third is a big detour and then stop and go traffic. There are only three ways across within a reasonable ride. I liked the idea of sitting on a bench rather than straddling a tank, and I kept seeing these cool looking retro scooters around. Now, all of a sudden, I was commuting 20 to 25 miles one way each day, and there wasn't a non-motorcycle season. Then I got a part time job, as a student, in Sacramento. Then I decided to go back to graduate school part time. on the other side of the Sacramento River in Yolo County. If we'd drive past a motorcycle dealer, I'd ask "can I buy a motorcycle?" Most of those years I couldn't afford one, and then we lived in an area with a lot of snow and it didn't seem like long enough of a riding season to make it really feasible.Ī few years ago we moved back to the Sacramento area. Whenever Norma asked me if I wanted anything, I'd answer " a motorcycle". But ever since I wanted another 2 wheeled vehicle.įor a lot of years, it was a running joke. I remember spending more time pushing it than riding it. It was a 250cc Ducati, and it was a mess. Strangely enough, I was stationed in Sacramento. She'll get somebody right on it.īack in 1968, we were just married and I was in the Air Force. And you were joking about the week, right. When I got home, I called her back and said it's on its way. She said it would be a week before she could inspect it. While I was waiting I called the dealer (Good Times Kawasaki and Suzuki), and talked to Service. I called them and an hour later a truck arrived to take the scooter away. While I was waiting for Norma I remembered that sticker I put under the seat that had a roadside assistance number. They were very nice, and helpful, and loaned me their phone. So I went to the only other place that looked open, the Oasis Club and Spa (women's physical fitness center and spa). This is an emergency, can I borrow one? She just looked at me. There's a grocery / convenience store there so I went in to use or borrow a phone. If you know Woodland (but who does?) across the street from the Y is a small shopping center. I figured that I'd go buy a ball and some straps, then go to u-haul and rent a trailer. I went to call Norma, my super understanding wife of 43 years, and to ask her to drive over. I just had a trailer hitch put on my Subaru, but hadn't even purchased a ball for it yet. Went to the front door, (the Y is closed on Saturday) returned to the scooter and found it standing in a puddle of oil, with more oil pouring out like a faucet was on. I've driven over speed bumps more radical than the curb, so I drove slowly over the curb, and heard a clang. The Y is on a fairly busy street, with a lot of concrete in front with a wide walkway coming off of the city sidewalk, and those tapered curbs. The Border Terrier Club uses a Y facility for events & I had to drop off a check. I had some errands to run around town on a beautiful Saturday, so I hopped on the scooter & off I went.įirst stop.
